Cannabis Terminology 101

Marijuana, weed, ganja, grass, dope, dro, etc.: there is no shortage of names for everyone’s favorite plant. The prevalence of these different names may be due in part to the prohibition of cannabis in the U.S. and around the world, which was often a politically-motivated and racially-targeted decision to outlaw behaviors that were common among populations that the government wanted to control. Once it became illegal, people would have needed to obscure their references to cannabis in order to hide the fact that they consumed / grew / sold it, and these names would need to evolve over time as they became well-known by the authorities.

Another potential reason for why there are so many different words for “marijuana” is that smoking weed often leads to talking about weed, which often leads to coming up with unique nicknames and descriptions for how the weed makes you feel… in other words, it’s like a self-replicating fractal, man.

Weed Measurements

Whether you’re selling or buying, knowing the lingo for different quantities of cannabis is essential if you want to participate in the underground (or “traditional”) market. From a dub to a zip and beyond, we’ve summed up the most common denominations of cannabis you’re likely to encounter on your dealer’s coffee table.

Popular in this category:

40 Bag

A bag of marijuana priced evenly at $40. The total amount of weed you will get out of a 40 bag depends on who you buy it from, and where you are located.

20 Bag

A bag containing 20 dollars worth of marijuana. The total volume of product you will receive for 20 dollars depends on who you buy it from and where you are located. Typically, a 20 bag contains about 2 grams of weed.

Dime Bag

Ten dollars worth of weed. This term is often used when buying from dealers in a prohibition state. A dime bag usually contains a single gram, but depending on your seller, you can get more or less for the price. The term ‘dime bags’ has been in use for decades, long before dealers started pricing by weight. But more and more dealers are doing away with the terminology.

40 sack

A term used by dealers and buyers to indicate the amount of weed in a bag. The amount and quality of weed can vary between sellers, especially in prohibition states where you may not have the luxury of choice. Some dealers may also be more generous than others, so you may even receive more than your money’s worth at times! A 40 sack contains $40 worth of cannabis, and similar terms such as 20 sack and 50 sack refer to receiving $20 and $50 worth of weed.

Synonyms for Weed

Mary Jane has many aliases, and much like Carmen San Diego, trying to find her when you’re traveling the world can be difficult if you don’t speak the local language. Luckily, we’ve compiled some of the most (and least) common nicknames that cannabis goes by. Some are regional, some are classical, but all of them mean the same thing.

Popular in this category:

Yerba

Slang for weed in spanish-speaking countries, but don’t confuse it with the heavily caffeinated tea Yerba Mate. For someone looking for herb in a foreign country asking for yerba would be a more generic term. For a tourist seeking something specific like a joint or a dealer more specific slang would be needed.

Wacky Tobacky

A lighthearted term for cannabis flower popularly used in the advent of 1950’s “reefer madness” culture. Wacky tobacky is a reference to tobacco, probably because both were rolled up into paper and then smoked, but one made the smoker a little bit more silly. The word is not often used in modern cannabis culture unless as a joke.

Treefer

The combination of two popular slang words for cannabis combined into one word that also refers to bud. Treefer combines the words ‘tree’ and ‘reefer’. Its use does not connote any particular meaning to the flower, it just seems to be used as a fun way to refer to your stash.

Tree

Cannabis plant bud, or more generally, any cannabis. It refers to the idea of cannabis as a plant, especially because the plants themselves can look like small trees. This term was especially popularized by the r/Trees subreddit, a growing source of cannabis culture, which leads to hilarious mix-ups when arborists seeking discussion stumble across the group. Fans of dendrology (the study of trees) eventually started the r/MarijuanaEnthusiasts community as a silly callback to the confusion.

Stoner Terms & Phrases

The “stoner” stereotype has been aggressively pushed in mainstream media for decades, both by proponents and detractors of cannabis. In reality, the effects of cannabis use vary from person to person, but that fact didn’t stop legions of stonified slang terms and references from getting couch-locked in mainstream culture.

Popular in this category:

Couchy

Usually used in reference to indica-heavy strains that make you groggy or sleepy. If you smoke some couchy weed while you’re on a couch, you’re probably not getting up anytime soon.

Chiefing

Hogging the weed in a group smoke session or taking huge rips. This term comes from the idea of a Native American chief smoking in large, deep hits off their pipe. It’s usually used to poke fun at someone who’s taking a bit too long to take their hit, or seems to think they’re more important and deserve more weed than everyone else–which is silly, of course!

Blitzed

The feeling of being under the sudden, heavy influence of cannabis. This term derives from “blitz,” an abbreviation of the German word “blitzkrieg.” Historical connotations aside, most stoners only realize they’re blitzed after it’s happened, often leading to even more euphoria. It can also have the opposite effect, however, and lead to greening out.

Burn One

The act of smoking weed. “Burn one” can be used colloquially to mean consuming cannabis in any form, but more specifically refers to the combustion of a small-to-moderate amount of pot often rolled up into a joint.
